Our students were invited to attend an interaction between Ramon Magsaysay Award winner Bezwada Wilson and Former Chief Justice of India and Padma Vibhushan awardee M. N. Venkatachaliah on the topic: ‘Young India has a crucial role to play in re-instilling the dwindling faith of the society in the system and pride in itself.’ This was held at Jnana Jyoti Auditorium, Central College.

Bezwada Wilson is an Indian activist who was born in 1966 in the Kolar Gold Fields and is the youngest child of parents who belong to the manual scavenging community. His father and eldest brother both worked as manual scavengers. Bezwada graduated in Political Science from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad and began his fight to end manual scavenging in 1986. He has been nominated a Senior Fellow by the Ashoka Foundation and was also awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in July 2016.

Best International School in Bangalore

This interaction gave our students insight into the significance of and challenges faced by the judiciary in a democratic setup. They also gained a unique perspective into the lives of people in the manual scavenging community.

Sahil Kuchlous, a Grade 10 Inventurer, who attended the event, had this to say,

It was very exciting to be attending the event, as it is not every day students are given an opportunity to interact with such esteemed guests. The discussion began with both guests introducing themselves and a brief view on the topic of the day, which was ‘Young India has a crucial role to play in re-instilling the dwindling faith of the society in the system and pride in itself.’ Mr. Wilson spoke about the importance of looking at education not just from the perspective of becoming something, but from the perspective of learning something new.

He also discussed why it is imperative for the youth to speak up when they see the many atrocities committed in our country, and to help ensure that they never happen again. With his wisdom earned over many years of hardships and experience, Mr. WIlson really helped open our eyes to the injustices that are constantly taking place around us. While Mr. Venkatachaliah spoke to us about the importance of the judiciary, and how and why the Indian judiciary has lost the respect of the people in the recent years. He helped us understand what really happens in our courts.

Further into the session, students were given an opportunity to ask questions, which were well received by the speakers and always answered in great detail. All of us left the interaction feeling like we had learned something new. It was great to speak to people who have been in the situations that many of us discuss every day, and the experience was truly inspiring.

Kaushik Kunal Singh (Grade 11) and Sahithi Pingali (Class of 2018) panelists at Zinnov Confluence 2018!

A technology thought leadership summit, Confluence has become synonymous with change in the Global R&D and Product Development space.

The 11th edition of the Zinnov Confluence held on 20 & 21 June at Taj Yeshwantpur had Inventurers Kunal and Sahithi exchanging views with other esteemed panelists on the topic: Millennial Dollar Baby : Investing in the Workforce of the Future. The other panelists who were part of this discussion were: Pankaj Narulla, Senior Vice President, Managed Services, Broadridge Financial Solutions (India) Private Limited; Vasanthi Srinivasan, Professor, IIMB;

V. Chandramouliswaran, Senior Director of Enterprise Data Services teams and Site Lead, Paypal Chennai.

Replying to questions addressed to them, Sahithi spoke about how she considers today’s generation to be multi dimensional; who enjoy doing a variety of things and are constantly attracted to new challenges. While Kunal spoke about the importance of finding a job which is open and allows one to explore. For more on their interesting discussion watch the video and read about Kunal’s experience below!

Kaushik Kunal Singh

Last week I was fortunate enough to be invited to speak at the Zinnov Confluence 2018 on the topic ‘Millennial Dollar Baby: Investing in the Workforce of the Future’. The conference provided insights about how organisations should prepare themselves for the next generation workforce, which I was representing. Throughout the discussion, I gave the audience a candid and honest perspective of what youngsters like me would expect from employers.

I was joined in the panel by Prof. Vasanthi Srinivasan from IIM; Pankaj Narulla, Sr. VP from Broadridge Financials; V.

Chandramouliswaran, Sr. Director at PayPal; and my fellow senior, Sahiti Pingali. Together we covered how employers must account for changes in the next generation workforce, our mindset, skills, needs and expectations.

I think one major revelation for us was that we youngsters are downright eager to make a difference, but ONLY after we understand its impact in the bigger picture. Sahiti and I also had an opportunity to voice our take on major forces like education and technology, and how we used them as resources to innovate and solve real-world issues at a young age.

Overall, the conference proved to be very fun and enlightening for everyone. It was striking listening to the other panellists, and there were plenty of surprises for both the older generation and us millennials. But one thing was for sure, the future of employment has MANY unanswered questions. And the only certainty is change!

Inventure Academy hosted second Arogya Bhagya (Good Health) event on campus

Inventure Academy, in affiliation with Round Square, hosted the second edition of Arogya Bhagya – a health camp event for neighbourhood government schools. A day long event, it took place at the Inventure campus and catered to over 300 students from these government schools. The event saw doctors and volunteers from the Inventure community volunteering their time and expertise to provide medical screening and create medical records (or Kahaaniyans) for these less privileged students.

The health checks comprised:

  • General medical examination, height, weight, BMI
  • Vision and auditory test
  • Basic dental health check-up
  • Deworming Tablets twice a year

Through this event, we hope to improve the general health of students so that they can further enjoy the benefits of education. According to government sources, every year about 2 million children under the age of seven lose their lives due to preventable diseases and we hope to change this through these initiatives.

We aim to conduct health workshops and screening camps interspersed through the year in the three government schools around our community in Dommasandra.  Happiness and bonding are also by products of this venture – with fun and games organised for the kids while they waited their turn. Popcorn, cotton candy, game stalls, mehendi, face painting were on offer for these delighted kids. The close bonds between the Inventure and government school kids was evident – a result of Inventure’s ongoing Community Outreach programme.

Darsh Kadam (Grade 12) said this about the event, “Days and weeks of planning were finally worth it when we saw how happy the children were when they came to our school. They rarely get the freedom that they had at Inventure and the sight of them running around the corridors definitely taught us all not to take things for granted.”

While Rivika Aarons (another Grade 12 student) said, “Arogya Bhagya was a day full of patience, hard work and fun. So worth it in the end, as we now look forward to seeing all these children healthy and fit for school.”

Quotes from Inventure parents, faculty and students on the success of our Inventurers at WE Model United Nations (WEMUN) Expo 2018 in Beijing!

Breaking all records, Inventure Academy has swept the awards at the WE Model United Nations (WEMUN) China Expo 2018, held from 2 to 8 August 2018 for High School students.

Team Inventure bagged 10 out of 12 awards including the most coveted WEMUN award for Best Delegation (#1 team overall), beating reigning champions the All American Team (who have been champions since 2012)! Read below quotes from our Inventure parents, faculty and students!

Mayur Murthy (Financial Consultant), parent of Arya Murthy: “As part of Team Inventure, my son’s experience of being a MUN Delegate and going on to win the Best Delegate and the Best Delegation awards at WEMUN China has been priceless. Competing at an international conference and winning accolades gives every one of these Inventure kids such immense self-confidence in their ability and helps to reinforce their belief that they can compete with any of their peers from around the world. In addition, the sheer knowledge gained from researching the issue at hand and their exposure to people and places from another culture is more than they could ever learn in a classroom setting.

Sejal and Priyesh Mody (Business People), parents of Anirudh Mody: “Inventure Academy truly upholds its motto in preparing our children for life and has a platform for every child. Mentoring them for experiences such as Model UN provides the perfect broad based platform for children to build solid researching capabilities, interact on a global level and experience the much needed “out of comfort zone” environment! Wish we had had these opportunities when we were kids!”

Lucy Joseph, Senior School History Lead & MUN team mentor: “Inventure Academy is known for excellence in both Academics and Beyond Academics. At WEMUN 2018, our champion MUN delegation has showcased for the world the school’s values of passion for excellence, integrity and dynamism through their ability to undertake in-depth research and their knowledge of the key concerns of the world.”

Zabil Noor, Senior School Science Lead & WEMUN team advisor: “Inventure students believe that “they matter” and it is upto them to bring about the change that they want to see in the world. It is this innate belief, team spirit and hard work that led them to the excellence they aimed for at WEMUN Expo 2018.”

Rituparna Dhar, History faculty & MUN team advisor: “It is a proud moment for Inventure on the world stage and I am deeply moved by the students’ conviction, focus & ability to cooperate and work as a team with other international students. A large measure of this success is a result of the culture of open dialogues & interactive classrooms that is encouraged at Inventure.”

Arya Murthy, Grade 10, Best Delegate: WEMUN Expo 2018 (Committee – Historical UNODC): “WEMUN was my first international MUN, and it has been an unforgettable experience. I learnt to work with people from different cultures and develop my critical thinking and negotiating skills. Everyone on the team supported each other through all the work and frustration of committee. By the end of the conference, I felt immensely proud – of my own achievement, and the incredible performance of our entire delegation. I got to meet some amazing people and open my mind to new experiences.”

Kaavya Mundkur, Grade 9, Best Delegate: WEMUN Expo 2018 (Committee – UN4MUN): “WEMUN taught me a lot more than just the the issue in the Central African Republic, the most important being that I should not presume to know how other delegates will be until I actually meet them, as each delegate is unique! My committee focused a lot on consensus and I ended up learning how to negotiate effectively despite language and other cultural barriers.”

Dhruv Iyengar, Grade 9 – Best Delegate: WEMUN Expo 2018 (Council for the European Union): “This was my first international conference and just my second MUN overall. Overall, it was one of the most amazing and best learning experiences of my life. I learnt that diplomacy extends beyond the four walls of committee to all parts of our lives. I met new people from different cultures, and faced new challenges which allowed me to tap into potential I had not previously realised.”

Anjali Agarwal, Grade 12, Honourable Mention: WEMUN Expo 2018 (United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC): “Attending a conference like WEMUN was an enthralling experience for me. It was my first international conference so I was able to meet people from around the globe with different perspectives and approaches to problems. There were many challenges during the conferences because of being in a different country, and I absolutely loved it! I made many new friends from China and was exposed to their different cultures and interests.”

Middle School Celebration of Learning

Three months of hard work, collaboration, exploration and perseverance, culminated on 31 August when Middle Schoolers presented their projects to their parents and teachers at the Celebration of Learning.
The students showcased around 50 projects centred around ‘interconnectedness’, the theme for this year’s CoL. They were ably guided by 12 mentors.

The event reflected student learning on not just a variety of subjects which they researched on, but also helped them learn how to design and develop their projects. They also learnt important life skills such as working as a team, dealing with failure, planning for success, delegation and collaboration.

Grade 7 Inventurer Adhir V Balaji while speaking about his experience said, “We learn that failure is the key to success. We had to research again and again and do the same thing again and again, to finally get the solution.”

“Education is a way of equipping people to answer the questions we already have. None of these questions come packaged into Maths, Science and English. It’s a combination of all these things. Using these tools to understand these questions and answer them better is a very necessary step,” said Prasanth Sistla, an Inventure faculty member.

Anushri Savanth (Grade 10) semi-finalist at Chittagong Grammar School (CGS) Art Competition 2018 – 2019

The theme for this year’s art competition ‘Together Towards Tomorrow’ had 217 entries from 27 schools. Anushri was among 26 students whose artwork was selected for the semi-finals. Seven Inventurers from Grades 10, 11 and 12 participated in this competition, a first for Inventure on this international platform. Congratulations Anushri!

Read below why she chose to draw this art form.

I have taken Kalamkari as my technique to illustrate the theme ‘ Together towards tomorrow ‘ . One of the main challenges that the Kalamkari artist face is the lack of water. The cotton cloth for the Kalamkari work needs to be pre-treated with water. Further, it needs to be soaked between paint sessions. The severe water scarcity has affected the lives of these artists.

In my painting, water takes on the form of a beautiful, be-jewelled woman. She is being trailed by a group of villagers, some being the very artisans who practice Kalamkari. Some attempt to collect her water droplets while others chase after her, demanding water on behalf of their village. They work together, sharing their ladders, pots, and bulls for one unified cause to make tomorrow better. I used fabric paints for this painting as the vibrant color range and consistency reminds me of the original Kalamkari work.

Art Exhibition

The field trip was really an eye-opener for me. The curator was really engaging and was really interesting to talk to and hear from. He spoke about how he selected the works for the exhibit and about sales of artwork and valuation. Those topics really interested me, as I was not very well informed in the business aspect of art.

The exhibit itself was very interesting. We spent a lot of time on the first floor, where the sculptures and the more abstract art was present. I learned a lot about abstract expressionism and developed even more respect for the style and artists.

The third floor, with the more traditional pieces, was jaw-dropping. Although there was more traditional art, the concepts and the art itself seemed abstract to me. For example, this piece by Ashu Gupta which really amazed me –

While traditional, the concept itself seems abstract.

I realised the importance of a concept. A meaningful concept makes the artwork even more appealing and rich.

All in all, the most important thing I learnt in this field trip is that art has to have a subtle, honest meaning. If that’s absent, no matter how technically perfect the artist is, the art will never be historical or world changing. That’s what separates good art from great art.
